In June of 2011, the Greater Sterling Development Corporation, with support from the Sauk Valley Area Chamber of Commerce and the City of Sterling, began to pursue the dream of a kitchen incubator. Culinary incubators make it financially feasible to start up a food business without the expense of establishing a commercial kitchen. The existing kitchen space at the incubator was an ideal location, and with the help of private donations, less than one year later, in the spring of 2012, The Kitchen Incubator of NW Illinois was open!
Northwest Illinois is abundant with agricultural resources and individuals promoting local foods initiatives. The Kitchen Incubator of NW Illinois is a 3,000 square foot, commercially licensed, commercially equipped kitchen that can be rented by the hour by individuals with a dream of starting a food-based business. The Kitchen Incubator of NW Illinois is also available for food-based fund raisers, teachers, cooking classes, and most other situations where a licensed food production facility is needed. We can accommodate almost any request...The sky is the limit for this not-for-profit, regional asset, designed and constructed to further develop local foods businesses in Illinois.
The monthly cost of renting The Kitchen Incubator of NW Illinois is, in most cases, less than one month of what a commercial electric bill would be! Individuals using The Kitchen Incubator of NW Illinois also have access to a local, year-round famers' market, the Twin City Farmers' Market, to market their products locally.
